Part 1 here.
So, Friday was going to be Joe Day. I was going to take myself out to lunch, do a little shopping, whatever. On my own, out of the house for the first time in a few weeks, away from my pets. It means I have to get up and drive my wife to work and pick her up, but that's no problem.
Thursday night rolls around, and I lay down in the bed around 10-ish... and nothing happens. Around 1AM I give up on sleeping, and go to my office until around 3AM. Finally I get to sleep around 3:30, except I have to pee at 5, and then the alarm goes off at 6. I says to my wife "fuck it, I'll do Joe Day another day" and get back in the bed. I'm asleep immediately, for about five minutes because about that time Randall finds a plastic tie from something, and wants to play fetch with me. That's Randall the CAT, aka Boobs the Fetching Cat.
So since I was awake and angry at this point, I went ahead and drove my wife to work. I came home, and basically turned right back around and went to the stores. I hit the New Balance store and got a pair of shoes (10.5 4E, thanks for asking), went to Lowes and got a sander, tung oil, and some light bulbs... then went to Harbor Freight which I love because they have the sort of tools you use once and they have them for cheap. I bought these 24" bar clamps that I'm only ever going to need for the current project and probably never again, and they were $4 rather than $24 at Lowes.
Drove all the way across town to Guitar Center, looking for a distortion pedal since the one I ordered for Xmas got taken away from me. They didn't have anything, and the sales guy was an idiot in any case. I was going to go to Music Go Round, but I just sort of gave up from exhaustion at that point. I started back towards home, planning on getting lunch along the way. I got turned around and pulled into a parking lot to check MapQuest... and that's when I saw The Sign.

The Husband is a big Harbor Freight fan.
The year Son moved out, we started collecting a few of tools per month (mostly bought at HF) and piled them up in a box; then gave him the whole load for Xmas.
Joe -
Since you haven't posted the rest of your story, I don't know whether you found what you needed at Grandma's.
Grandma's used to be at Juan Tabo and Lomas, and I haven't been there since they moved, but they have a good reputation.
If you didn't get what you need, there's another music store at San Pedro and Menaul, just north of Staples on the northeast corner of the intersection, that might have what you want. I've been in there, too, and they have been helpful to me. L
LSGC:
DO you mean the Guitar Center? The guy behind the pedals counter tried to sell me a Boss overdrive when I asked for a high-gain distortion. I'll keep my business to where people actually play guitar, thanks.
I hate guitar center, they're even worse than Best Buy in my estimation. I'm reasonably knowledgeable when it comes to electronics, so I can easily tell how clueless the BB employees are. But when it comes to guitars and gear I'm not that informed. So it's pretty bad that I can easily tell when the GC clowns are shoveling a load of BS.
I went there recently against my better judgement (since they are just down the road) to look at bass guitars for my daughter for xmas. The sales guy that glommed onto us kept trying to hard-sell a starter package to us. "It's the last one in stock, we don't know if we'll get more before Christmas..." Look, pal, I'm not here so you can push out your old inventory.
I explained why I wasn't interested in those starter packs, but I might as well have been talking to the carpet. Not my only experience like that at GC. Sam Ash is a little bit better, so far as corporate stores go.
Hey Tajparis, Guitar Center can be a pretty terrible place to go, and I DO know an awful lot about gear so it tends to drive me nuts. The best Guitar Center/Sam Ash experience I've ever had was in Richmond, VA... because the two stores were walking distance from each other and they had to compete with each other. And Sam Ash was still much better.
